What is bowling thumb tape?

The primary purpose of bowling thumb tapes is to solve the problem of friction loss caused by excessive sweating, which can lead to inconsistent and less accurate pitches. It helps the bowler maintain a consistent grip on the ball for greater efficiency and control.

Additionally, the bowling finger tape provides cushioning and reduces pressure on the thumb, reducing the risk of discomfort or injury during prolonged bowling, such as chafed fingers or blisters.

What is bowling insert tape?

Bowling ball insert tape, also known as bowling ball thumb hole tape, is a type of tape used to customize the fit and feel of a bowling ball’s thumb hole in a bowling ball. Its primary role is to solve the problem of loose thumb holes.

When bowling, the thumb is inserted into the thumb hole of the ball to provide a firm grip and control of the ball. However, the thumbhole fit varies from person to person and can sometimes be too loose or tight.

Thumb Hole Fit: Determine whether you need tape to make your thumb hole tighter or looser. If the thumb hole is too loose, you may want to consider thicker tape to provide a snugger fit. If the hole is too tight, thinner tape or patches with less thickness can be used.

Material: Kinesiology tape for bowling comes in different materials, such as textured or smooth. Textured tape provides additional grip, which can be beneficial if you tend to release the ball early. Smooth tape, on the other hand, reduces friction, allowing for a smoother release.

Thickness: Kinesiology tape for bowling is available in various thicknesses, typically ranging from 1/32″ to 1/8″. Thinner tapes make minor adjustments, while thicker tapes offer more significant changes. Start with a medium-thickness tape and experiment to find the right level of adjustment for your thumb hole.

Pre Cut Bowling Thumb Tape

Bowling thumb tape comes in many forms, and most people opt for pre-cut patches. This patch is more convenient to carry and use; it does not need to be cut and can be used immediately after taking it out. Different suppliers use different packaging formats. For example, some are made into an undivided patch volume, and some are split into individual patches.

Pre Cut Bowling Insert Tape

Bowling Insert Tape is available in various materials, such as textured or smooth, and in different thicknesses. Pitchers can choose the type of tape that suits their preferences, helping them achieve more reliable release and better ball control. Bowling Insert Tape usually has a straight side on one side and a curved side on the other. This is for the convenience of fitting the hole’s inner wall when inserted into the hole.

A bowling tape roll is also a common bowling tape. It has a broader range of uses. It can be used not only on thumbs, fingers, inside the hole but also on knees, wrists, ankles, and other places that are often injured. Its disadvantage is that you need scissors every time you use it. The advantage is that you can cut any size and shape according to your needs without limitation.

Pre-cut Bowling thumb tape

The pre-cut Bowling thumb tape should be placed on the back of the thumb.

Align the rounded end of the Bowling thumb tape with the contour of your fingertip as best you can.

Start with the thumb, and apply the bowling thumb tape as smoothly as possible to avoid air bubbles, wrinkles, or other deformities. If the Bowling thumb tape is wrinkled or improperly used, it may start to peel or fall off.

Some people like to put one piece of tape on the back of the thumb and another overlapping piece of tape on the side of the thumb.

Adjust where to stick and how many strips to apply until you find a setting that works for you.

uncut tape

Cut a length of Bowling thumb tape from the roll approximately the size from the nail’s tip to the thumb’s base. Probably about 2 inches or so.

Cut one end into a curved shape similar to the curve of the outline of your thumb.

Just as you would with pre-cut tape, start applying it from the outline of your thumb and smooth the bowling thumb tape as much as possible. Line it up with your thumb to avoid wrinkling/deformation and prolong the tape’s life. Some bowlers will change the Bowling thumb tape multiple times during a bowling night.

Pre-cut Bowling insert tape

The first step is to decide where you want to put the Bowling Insert Tape in the hole. If the fit is snug but not snug enough, and there is no tape in the hole yet, start with the part of the hole that touches the side of the thumb closest to the index finger. If the hole still needs more tape, the Bowling Insert Tape can be placed at 180° to the first. Starting with the third strip, by feel, place the Bowling Insert Tape where the hole feels “loosest.”

Once you’ve established where the bowling ball thumb hole tape will go, use some pointed tools, like some small screwdrivers, scissors, crochet hooks, or anything else of similar size.

Prepare the bowling ball thumb hole tape by bending it slightly, with the adhesive side as the convex side.

Glue the rounded end of the bowling ball thumb hole tape to the end of the tool.

Carefully slide the tape into the hole and lower it so that the rounded end of the tape is just below the edge of the hole. If you stick the bowling ball thumb hole tape too far from the ball, the tape will start to peel off, which is annoying and can mess with your release.

Carefully remove the tool as you smooth out the tape, leaving the tape behind.

This process is the same for any type of in-hole tape, including smooth, textured, thin, or thick.
